How to Start a Fishing Podcast

Best Fishing Podcasts
Behind the scenes recording a podcast.

If you’re a passionate angler, then we need you to start a podcast. The reason is that hunting and fishing are starting to see a decline in participation, especially with the younger generations. We need to have those who love to fish share the message with those who just haven’t found the stoke yet.

Podcasting Gear

Getting into podcasts might seem like a lot of work, but it’s not. All you need is a decent-sounding microphone and a recording device. If you have a laptop, then all you need is a decent USB microphone and use a free app like Audacity or Garageband.

Getting Interviews

When you think of a podcast, think of it as a modern form of blogging. Back in the day, someone would spend time writing an article to transfer information from their brain to others. Now with audio, you can simply talk into your microphone, and your audience can know what you’re thinking or have a conversation with someone, and they can be a fly on the wall.

It’s always recommended to do your interviews in person so you can have better conversational chemistry, but if that’s not possible, Skype is a decent option. Make sure you download Call Recorder so you can record both audio and video automatically.

When it comes to topics, it’s usually best to have a pre-interview where you learn about the guest and give them a chance to come up with a few questions you can bring up during the conversation. Keep it simple in the beginning, then add more complexity as you go on.

Distribution

A podcast is just an audio file that’s hosted on a podcast platform, which is then distributed to those who subscribe to it. We use Libsyn for our podcast hosting, but there are other ones you can use.

All you need to do is upload your mp3 file and enter your episode description, and you’re all set. Schedule when you want to make your episode live, and it’ll go out to your subscribers in a flash.

Marketing

By far, the hardest part is growing your podcast. Don’t get discouraged when you put a bunch of effort into recording the interview, editing, building the website, launching, and only seeing one download from your friend or family member you bugged on Facebook.

Marketing is hard, but it just takes a sound strategy and consistency. Don’t try and spam it all over the place in the hopes that it’ll garner attention. It’ll likely just get you flagged.

A better way would be to reach out to other podcasts in the same and collab with them. See if you can go on their podcast and talk about fishing and vice versa. Then you can state your case why other fishermen should listen to you, and over time you’ll grow.

Another option is to start a YouTube channel and upload your podcasts there as well. YouTube is the second largest search engine, so it makes sense to make your content available there too.

Just remember to go where the people already are and give them a reason to listen.

If you have any questions about starting a podcast, reach out, and I’ll help.
